If we're going to talk about the ultimate grunge band, i would have to say THE WIPERS eclipse any of these big name bands, including Nirvana, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains.
Nirvana covered their songs Return of the Rat and D-7.. Cobain was a huge fan too and i think their albums Youth of America and Over the Edge are about as grunge as it gets. I can't believe people call Stone Pimple Toilets grunge and don't mention the Wipers.
